hey life studies are good
can add a bit more detail tho ahem :D
but seriously
and before drawing or painting do spend a few minutes to just read the image or the reference you have, its not all about drawing but the amount you observe, drawing is like a tool to translate what you have observed on to paper or to the comp, that's how i think of it , cos even though i dont practice drawing allot ,i do observe and it actually has helped me allot...

and yea about your colored works, there are some key things missing
like for example
about the nail cutter
it lacks dimension...
for example, if you could have given the paper a bit of gradiation to gray, it will give allot more dimension to it. same thing goes with the scenery, there's allot i can say about it to help.. like the closer the things are the sharper the details get, which in this case seems the opposite and when it comes to backgrounds you will have to think about allot of things like lights , fog all you have to do is look at the refs more closer and just keep an open mind when you work on backgrounds, visualize the environment, think of you actually being there, or even the smell of the environment that sorta pushes you to think more in detail.. this works for me....
